ASUNCION, Paraguay -- A baby declared dead by doctors miraculously woke up just in time for his funeral wake, according to family members.
The infant was born 16 weeks premature and pronounced dead Friday by doctors at a hospital in Paraguay.
Doctors say the baby didn't move, barely had any respiratory reflexes and that a heartbeat could not be detected.
The family was sent home with a death certificate, and a cardboard box that served as a makeshift coffin for the baby's body.
A few hours later as family members prepared for the infant's funeral wake, the unbelievable happened.
Family members say they opened the box, took the baby out and were shocked when he began crying and moving his arms and legs.
The second surprise, the family claims, is that the hospital told them it was a baby girl when in fact it was a male.
The baby is now back in the intensive care unit in stable condition.
The hospital has opened an investigation to determine if there was negligence on the part of the medical staff.
