A plan to postpone elections to August next year is gaining momentum among key government officials and some influential politicians.
Those behind the plan want to use the delay in the arrival of the Biometric Voter Registration kits as the main reason for pushing the March polls to August 2013.
The High Court ruled in January this year that elections will be held in March 4, 2013.
Those behind the plan want to claim that the IEBC needs more time to finalize preparations for elections including voter registration. They want to show that the only solution is to have the election in August 2013.
A scheduled meeting between President Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission aborted yesterday.
IEBC commissioners and senior staff went to Harambee House yesterday but could not meet the President. The meeting has now been set for today.
Yesterday Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa questioned why the BVR issue had taken long to be resolved and threatened to name the people behind the delay.
“In two days time this delay will be addressed. Kenyans must be told if there is any individual in government who want to derail the elections,” Wamalwa said.
Wamalwa met EU heads of mission and said that the process is being sabotaged by bureaucracy.
He said the French supplier Morpho Inc. had already produced 6000 kits that are awaiting shipment.
The Treasury took over procurement of the BVR kits after the IEBC canceled a tender in August because of outside interference.
Finance minister Njeru Githae yesterday denied that there was a plot to further delay elections.
“We do not want anybody delaying election.
