Mobile service provider Safaricom early today scooped the top prize as the entity that had paid the most tax in Kenya for the year 2011/2012. Second on the list was brewer EABL followed by the Teachers Service Commission and then cigarette maker BAT.
The rest of the top ten was dominated by a rapid succession of banks and corporations like KCB, Barclays, Kenya Ports Authority, Equity, Stanchart and KenGen. The awards were given during the National Tax Payers’ day ceremony which was attended by President Mwai Kibaki among other dignitaries. During his speech, the president warned those evading paying taxes that the government will catch up with them;
"I remind Kenyans that tax evasion is an economic crime punishable under the Economic Crimes Act," he said during the Taxpayers' Day celebrations in Nairobi.
The President also pledged that the government will continue with tax reforms;
"We also aim to make our tax system simpler, easier to comply with and efficient in promoting domestic investment, Foreign Direct Investment and employment creation. I am happy that the reforms we have implemented so far have resulted in increased tax collections," he said.
The President added that the government was now funding 95% of the national budget through internal tax collection;
"The government will continue to ensure that the revenue raised is utilised efficiently and transparently through the elimination of wastage and corruption. We will also continue to ensure that resources are allocated in accordance with priority development targets," he said.
