A group of leaders from the Kamba community have condemned an attack on Kilome MP John Harun Mwau on Saturday that was said to have been carried out by supporters of the Wiper Democratic Movement.
Mwau, popularly known as the ‘Boss’ for his larger than life persona, was reportedly pelted with stones and driven away from a rally at Kasayani, Kibwezi west constituency which was being held to launch the campaign of a Wiper parliamentary aspirant by the name Mwengi Mutuse.
Youths at the rally reportedly stopped Mwau from addressing the crowd and chased him and his bodyguards away. There are reports that Mwau had to distract the chasing crowd with money to stop them from pursuing him any further.
Speaking to the crowd a little later Kibwezi MP Prof Philip Kaloki said that it was regrettable that the Mwau had been chased from his own home ground;
“Let us welcome and accommodate all leaders in Makueni County and listen to them even if we do not support their ideologies, that way we will ensure peaceful elections in 2013,” said Kaloki.
Former Assistant Minister and MP for Kibwezi Agnes Ndetei echoed Kaloki’s sentiments;
“That was a very unfortunate thing to happen and does not characterize the politics of
Makueni County. The government should act swiftly against those involved. I condemn it in the strongest terms and say that Makueni voters will vote peace loving people into office in the coming election,” said Ndetei.
Others who condemned the attack were Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, former army commander Lt-Gen (rtd) Jones Mutwii and Kibwezi ODM chairman James Mukosi.
